BIO

Ro Artland is an accomplished Canadian artist, poet, and writer, who experiments with Mixed & Multi-Media, and works with a team of professional artists, designers, and translators to bring together poetry and prose, text and image, sound and voice.

The artistic vision of Ro Artland has its roots in an ancient Bulgarian town and has spread from the horizons of the Black Sea to the oceans surrounding Canada. The beauty and depth of that vision aim at awakening and moving today’s dulled aesthetic sensibilities.

Born in 1964 in a family that sustained a genuine appreciation for the Arts and Crafts, Ro Artland received her first art lessons by her parents at a very early age. After years of exploring the style of the French impressionists and admiring the exquisite palette of the Canadian painter James Wilson Morrice, as well as the surrealist twist of Marc Chagall, she began to draw and paint intensively in the period between 2005 and 2012, to emerge as an artist with unique strength and breadth of vision. The exhibitions in which she participated in the spring and summer of 2012: Current Sea/Currency and Sight-on-Site Gala Art Show, in Stratford, Ontario, testify for her artistic achievements. In October 2012, Samuel J. Zacks Gallery at York University opened its doors to Ro Artland’s solo exhibition “Escapes: from Seascapes to Starscapes”. To the artist, it was a life-changing event at which she was happy to display worlds of beastly waves and distant galaxies captured by her imagination.

In both her fiction and art, while being fascinated with the creative process and issues of composition, Ro Artland allows her works to take a life of their own, make their whimsical choices of color, shape, light or words, and erect towers and golden domes, depict nostalgically pastoral landscapes, and display dreams, mirages, and visions.

In fiction, the creative vision of Ro Artland centers around the paradoxical beauty of impossible realism. Her Fiction of the Impossible explores the unattainable that exists around and within us and that is crying out to be unveiled as real and addressed as possible.

Although the author has experimented with a variety of literary genres, they all fall under the umbrella of women’s writing. Her poetry has been published in US and Canadian magazines and anthologies and has won several poetry awards. In 2023 Ro Artland illustrated her poetry book House of Matches with her own artwork; the book was published by Friesen Press in 2024, followed by the epic fantasy Medusa Gorgonis, that appeared in the bookstores in the same year. Her latest art project is a series of visual novels that aim to reveal a startling multi-layered existence perceived only by those who have eyes for it.

Ro Artland is the pseudonym of Rositza Georgieva. The author is currently teaching Professional and Creative Writing at renowned educational institutions in Toronto, Ontario.
